Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas
Costa Palmera lies within an environmentally protected green zone within the 445-hectare Playa Granda Marine Turtle National Park, which among other activities offers turtle tours. The refuge protects beaches (including 22,000 hectares out to sea), forests and mangrove swamps on the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in Santa Cruz Canton, along with the prime nesting site of the Leatherback turtle, an endangered species. In May of 1990, the entire shoreline, including Costa Palmera's private stretch of beach, was incorporated into the national park system.
